$1000 science journalism competition for JCU postgraduates

Do you find that the longer you study the less able you are to communicate what you do to the rest of society? If so, then this competition is for you!

JCU and Australasian Science are joining forces to look for short, punchy and original articles on popular science that convey the excitement of research to a scientifically curious public.

To enter the competition you need to submit an engaging article of no longer than 2200 words about new results in your field, making sure to incorporate those findings into a wider context of more general interest. You are encouraged to discuss results from your own research project in your article, however reports on other recent, exciting developments in your field are also welcome. The winning entry will be published in Australasian Science during 2007. You are strongly advised to browse a copy in the library before submitting your article (in JCU's library at 500 P108 or online). With a total circulation of about 7000, and standing subscriptions at university and municipal libraries nationwide, Australasian Science is a widely read science monthly aimed at the general public. The winning entrant will receive an additional $1000 in cash. The runner-up will receive $250.

Last years winner, Ashley Frisch, had this to say about the competition: "It's not easy getting published, nor getting recognition for the work you do. The SatCE Competition enabled me to get both at the same time, not to mention the bonus $1000 in prizemoney. These rewards certainly outweighed the effort required to enter. JCU's SCIENCE at the CUTTING EDGE competition is open to all PhD and Masters research students enrolled at James Cook University whatever stage you are at in your degree. Entries should be submitted to JCU's Science at the Cutting Edge competition, courtesy of Tom Blenkinsop, School of Earth Sciences, James Cook University, Townsville campus, Qld 4811 by Friday 7th of September, 2007. Entries will be assessed by a five-person panel comprising JCU's media liason office, three active researchers from JCU, and the editor of Australasian Science, Guy Nolch.
